Dare Mighty Things

Do Something Today that Scares You

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

Theodore Roosevelt - Former President of the USA

1. ⚔️ Be Bold

Life is too short to be held captive by fear. We fear what “they” may think, we fear the unknown, and we fear failure.

Instead of being paralyzed by this fear, take action in spite of it. Try something new even though you think you might fail. And if you do fail, it is rarely as bad as you imagine.

Many learning processes rely on failure. When you learned to walk your brain tried many different electrical pulse timings before one worked and your legs moved right, left, right, left. Learning to walk required failing over and over again. These falls were the feedback your brain needed so that a new combination of electrical pulses could be tried the next time.

Now your brain doesn’t even think about walking. You think that it is so natural and “easy.” A toddler would disagree. It was actually quite difficult and took many attempts. Think about this the next time you try to learn something difficult.

2. 🏔️ Set Lofty Goals

Set goals for yourself that are difficult. If they are too easy, statistically you have a lower chance of completing them than more challenging ones.

They also must be measurable. Write your goals down on paper and set specific schedules for when you will practice or work towards them over a 12 week period. Choose the specific outcome you would like to achieve and attach values to them.

If you want to learn a language, lay out how long you will practice per day, what you would like to do with your learned language, and give yourself 3 month blocks in which to work on the skill. Your goal should sound like: I will have a 15 minute conversation with a native speaker about a topic we are both interested in.

Laying out your goal with specificity allows you to work backwards and determine the small steps you need to take to arrive there.

3. 🏆Your Boldness Makes Breakthrough Possible for Others

Sir Roger Bannister was the first person to break the “impossible” four minute mile.

For this incredible feat of human performance, he was knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

He showed the world that what once was impossible was now very possible. Since then thousands of people have broken the 4 min mile mark because they believed that they could do it too. Here is the chronological list of the American Sub 4:00-milers.

Who in your life can you inspire by being bold, tackling your dreams, and finishing strong?
