The Power of Servant Leadership
In 2015, a man began acting in a popular satirical show called “Servant of the People.” In this show, he fought corruption and became president of his country.
Four years later, Volodymyr Zelenskyy (the actor) was elected President of Ukraine in a landslide victory. After just two years of his presidency, Russia declared war on Ukraine.
In crisis moments like these, servant leaders shine. Instead of fleeing the country, Zelenskyy fights alongside his people. He has demonstrated his belief that his country is worth fighting for and that he is not above the task.
His people are drawn to him and rally behind him. He is deeply respected and admired globally for his integrity, courage, and desire for change.
He has set forth a clear vision for his people and daily acts toward achieving it.
The Habits of Servant Leaders
A servant leader is known for a few core qualities:
Active Listening
To lead someone well, you must form a relationship with them. A relationship requires a shared purpose from everyday conversations where each party is given space to be heard and appreciated.
Ownership Mentality
Great leaders in any company or organization take responsibility at every level. They act like owners even if they are not. They care about small details and pursue excellence.
Strong Ethics
The greatest leaders are known to do what they said they would do. They have integrity and unbending morals.
Humility
No task is beneath them. They often take part in activities that others don’t expect they would do. Small details are just as important to them as high-profile decisions.
Practicing What You Preach
To be a great leader as an engineer, practice these principles daily. Excellence in any area starts with doing the small things well.
The truth is that the better you handle your current responsibilities, the more you will be entrusted with in the future.
Become someone who is dependable. Start by accepting responsibility for things that aren’t in your job description.
I know that you can make a difference where you are and that you will do incredible things. The future depends on you :)
