How to Test Your Ideas Quickly and Cheaply

Bring Your Idea to Life and Nail Product-Market Fit

Great ideas are worthless without execution.

Jake Knapp - Author of Sprint

If you are an engineer or a creative person of any type, you have probably had the itch to create something and share it with the world. Unfortunately, the standard process to bring an idea to market requires significant upfront capital and on average nine to twelve months of your life. All of this before you know if anyone would even want/need what you’ve made.

Luckily, there is a better way. Jake Knapp in his book Sprint outlines the process he has used over a hundred times to test ideas rapidly and cheaply.

What is a Sprint?

A sprint is 5 consecutive days of brainstorming, creating, and testing with around 7 other people. Each day has a different objective, but they all lead to testing solutions for the problem you are trying to solve.

  • Monday: Map out the problem you want to solve.

  • Tuesday: Sketch solution ideas to the problem.

  • Wednesday: Decide which ideas to prototype.

  • Thursday: Create a “goldilocks quality” prototype.

  • Friday: Test the prototype and get feedback from customers.

Jake explains a Sprint in 90 seconds:

The beauty of a sprint is that you get clarity about your idea and if it works in one week instead of a year. If you would like to learn more about Design Sprints or the shortened Design Sprint 2.0, please check out The Sprint Book Website.
