Reclaim Your Day: Top Time Management Techniques for Engineers
(that don't leave you feeling burnt out)
Hey there 👋 ,
We’ve all been there. That day or week, you are rushing around from one thing to the next, and it all feels unorganized and stressful.
It doesn’t have to be this way. To focus on what matters to us as engineers, we must have organized calendars that fit us well.
The following tools and thought processes make scheduling much easier.
Let’s Dive in 👇️
In today’s edition:
Start with what is most important to you
Make the Plan
Calendar Audit
But first, let’s learn how Betterment can help us.
Your IRA, made to order
Choose where and when you want to retire, and a Betterment IRA can help make your money hustle all the way there.
Decide What is Important to You
The first step in managing your time well is deciding the few things that you care about most.
We can apply Prateo’s principle which says that 20% of what we do will account for 80% of the results.
What are the key activities that must be on your calendar?
Time with loved ones, work, reading, or working out?
These few activities should be the foundation of your schedule.
The beauty of starting with the things you love and prioritize the most means that they always have a place on your calendar.
These activities are the big rocks that you fill up your schedule with before you pour in small activities that fill in the gaps.
If you start with the little things there will be no room for what you have said is most important.
Put it on Your Calendar
Now that we know our priorities, put them on a calendar.
This can be an Apple calendar, google calendar, or physical calendar.
According to science the most effective way to schedule is by time blocking.
Create blocks for everything you do, and account for transition times or commutes.
I have often heard the saying, “If it is not on your calendar it won’t happen.”
Schedule breaks, walks, and meals with friends or family.
Here’s an example
Google Calendar will even calculate how much each week you are spending on each activity if you color code it.
Visually this helps you see what’s next in your day.
For any activity you want to add to your calendar, use the Eisenhower matrix 👇️
This will help you determine how to deal with any task or event that you need to make a scheduling decision about.
Do a Calendar Audit
Once a week make changes to your schedule if needed.
Your schedule is yours. Craft it for you.
If something isn’t working, you can change it.
Not getting enough sleep, put your bedtime on your calendar.
As engineers, we can create a schedule we love to create lives we love.
Elevate your calendar and schedule the things that matter to you today!
Takeaways:
Put the priorities on your calendar first
Color code it
Review your plan
