Walking for Creativity
An Old Way to Approach New Problems
All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.
3 Reasons You Should Take a Walk Today:
1. 🤔 Enhance Your Thinking
Researchers from Stanford University, showed that walking increases creativity by 60% compared to sitting. This increase is substantial and could mean the difference between having an idea that allows for financial freedom or remaining in debt.
TIP: If you are working on a project with other people and need fresh ideas, consider holding a walking meeting to have brainstorming sessions. If you think you’ll forget what you discussed, try using a voice recording app.
2. 🫡 Your Brain Reports Back
Have you ever tried really hard to remember some fact you used to know, and come up short, only to have it smack your proverbial face while taking a shower a few weeks later? The trying hard part is a phenomenon called fixation forgetting. When we try really hard to remember something, occasionally it can get drowned out by all the ideas connected to it. Similar to showering, walking can activate a brain state neurologists call the Default Mode Network which is when your prefrontal cortex is less active and allows things your brain has put on the back burner to bubble up unprompted.
3. 🧠 Your Brain will Thank You
Ever notice how good it feels to give your brain a break? The poor thing is working overtime to attend to your every need. A walk is a perfect way to reward it for so many jobs well done. This week, consider sprinkling a few mini walks in order to unwind, reset, and recharge.
