What is an Engineer?
Who they are, what they do, and why we need them.
The ideal engineer is a composite…He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems.
1. Who are Engineers?
Engineers are marked by curiosity, imagination, leadership, and creativity.
They are the people who are constantly asking why things are the way they are and how those things work.
They often like to think about the following three questions:
What is the problem?
Who has the problem?
Why is that problem important to solve?
2. What do they do?
Everyday you interact with hundreds of items made by engineers. The device you are reading this on for example, was created by many engineers who worked and invented for years. The software all the way to the manufacturing processes were fine tuned by them for your device to exist.
Their handiwork is everywhere and we would be living in the dark ages without them.
What do they do:
Invent
Design
Analyze
Build and Test
3. Why do we need them?
Without engineers many of the technologies and advancements in human civilization would not exist. These people look at the same world you look at every day and decided they could add something to it.
Engineers perpetually envision a brighter future, characterized by enhanced transportation, cutting-edge technologies, sustainable energy solutions, and diminished prevalence of disease.

Final Thoughts
What engineer do you look up to or admire? What do you love about Engineering? I’d love to hear about your experiences.
